- Captain Holmes and his wife, Helen, live happily at Fort Easter. A ball is given in honor of Major Nevins, who has just arrived at the Post. When Helen was a mere school girl she fancied herself in love with Nevins and wrote him a number of undated letters. Renewing his acquaintance at the ball, Nevins makes himself decidedly offensive and taunts her with the letters. The next night, while Holmes is at headquarters, Helen receives a letter from Nevins saying that, if she will come to his rooms at once, he will give her the letters. Helen goes to Nevins' apartments and instead of giving her the letters he taunts her. Holmes, who has been directed to deliver an order to Nevins enters the house unannounced, the front door being open. As he is about to make his presence known, he hears his wife's voice and listens at the portieres. Helen pleads. Nevins insults her. A shot comes from behind the portieres and Holmes staggers into the room, his revolver falling to the floor. Nevins falls dead. At the trial, Saka, Nevins' Japanese servant, confesses that he killed Nevins to avenge the honor of his sister. His testimony explains how the shooting was accomplished.

The half-breed goes out to pick wood. During their absence, Joe enters the cabin and forces his unwelcome attentions upon May. She stops him by showing him the baby and talking until the half-breed returns, when he makes his exit. He follows Tom to town and sees him enter the saloon with Max the ranchman and some cowboys. Tom and Max get into an argument over their cards and the hot tempered Max strikes at Tom, who retaliates. Max draws his gun and Tom anxious to avoid bloodshed smashes the lamp with a chair. In the brief spell of darkness a flash is seen and when lights are brought Max is seen lying across the table badly wounded and unconscious. Tom demands to know who did it and the guilt is fastened upon him. He is taken off by the sheriff. In the meantime Joe has disappeared from the scene. May becomes anxious at Tom's absence and sends the half-breed to find out the cause. He traces Tom and in an interview learns all about the shooting of the rabbit and the cause of the empty chamber in his revolver, which led to his arrest. The half-breed rides back and gets the rabbit and tells May the news. May leaves the baby in the charge of her mother and sets out on horseback to right matters if possible. The cowboys, enraged at the attempt upon their boss, go to the jail and take Tom and lead him out to hang him. May comes across Joe, who is mortally injured. He calls to her and tells her the truth. The half-breed takes him upon his horse. The party reach the scene of the hanging just in time and Tom is set free.

Bobby is given an assistant with a chip on his shoulder, Milton Hong, who thinks the case should have been his. Meanwhile, Judge Rifkind and his wife, Sarah, go to an alumni weekend in the country. Rifkind is offered a teaching position at the law school.
